Integrated Pest Management in Organic Farming Systems

Track chairs: Stefano Colazza, Gianfranco Romanazzi

Although the growth of organic farming system, there has been a clear lack of research-based information to develop suppressive pest control tactics to control of all pest taxa, arthropods, pathogens, weeds, and vertebrates. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an ecosystem-based strategy aiming to develop long-term prevention of pests or their damage by a combination of all suitable control tools in a compatible strategy, such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant cultivars. Pest-management approach in organic systems is founded basically on indirect and/or preventive measures, while direct or reactive control methods are rare and need to follow organic production standards. Overall, the volume of pest management studies for organic agriculture is quite limited as compared with the wider literature on IPM for conventional crops, therefore there is need for the still young research activities to fill the gap of knowledge and to improve the strategies for pest management in organic systems.

We welcome theoretical and empirical contributions from researchers and practitioners on themes related to this specific track. All contribution should provide results relevant for the development of the organic sector. Themes related to this track include, but are not limited to:

  • Pest prevention tools and strategies
  • Reduction of use of persistent compounds in the environment
  • Mechanisms for natural enemy enhancement
  • Chemical ecology meets conservation biological control
  • Landscape Structure and Biological Control
  • Alien organisms affecting biodiversity and the functioning of ecological processes
